Earlier this month, William and I took on the unique challenge of Kansas City’s Groundhog Run, a race unlike any other. While February weather can be unforgiving, we were fortunate that this event took us 100% underground into the Hunt Midwest SubTropolis—the world’s largest underground business complex. With a steady 65-degree climate year-round, it was the perfect setting to get some miles in without braving the winter chill.
Beyond the novelty of running in a subterranean tunnel system, the Groundhog Run supports Ability KC, an organization dedicated to helping children and adults with disabilities through therapeutic and educational programs. Running for a great cause always adds an extra layer of motivation, knowing that each step taken helps fund impactful programs in our community.
Another unique feature of this race was the VIP parking option available near the event. Otherwise, free buses transported runners to and from a remote parking lot, which we utilized and appreciated for the warm and convenient ride to the event. If you’re considering running next year, we highly recommend arriving early to allow ample time for race packet pickup (if you choose race-day pickup) and checking your belongings at the gear check.
Once inside the tunnels, we picked up our packets, checked our gear, and joined a crowd of enthusiastic participants, all eager to take off beneath the limestone ceilings. The mix of seasoned runners, first-timers, and costumed participants made for an exciting and welcoming atmosphere. The energy was electric.

Running underground had a distinct vibe—dim lighting, cavernous rock walls, and a sense of surreal motion as we powered through the tunnels. The course itself was mostly flat with some slight inclines, making it a great route to focus on pacing and endurance.

Crossing the finish line is always an amazing feeling, but there’s something extra satisfying about emerging victorious from an underground race! Both William and I gave it our all, pushing through the last stretch with determination.

After catching our breath and grabbing some water, we proudly received our finishers’ medals—a symbol of both the underground miles conquered and the difference made for Ability KC.

The Groundhog Run is a must-do event for any runner looking for something unique during the cooler months. It’s well-organized, supports an amazing cause, and provides a race-day experience unlike any other. Plus, let’s be honest—who doesn’t want to say they’ve run a race entirely underground?
