Birds of a Feather: Winged Encounters at the National Aviary – Pittsburgh, PA

In addition to tracking down the famous Primanti Bros. sandwich on our trip to Pittsburgh in November, we also explored the museums, libraries, and zoos that the Steel City has to offer. Our first stop was the National Aviary. This indoor, nonprofit zoo is located in Allegheny Commons Park on the Northside and hosts more than 500 birds representing more than 150 species from around the world.

We quickly learned that birds weren’t the only animals hosted by the aviary. Our first encounter after purchasing admittance and passing through the lobby were Malayan Flying Foxes. We arrived just in time to listen to a staff member’s presentation on these fascinating, fruit-eating winged creatures.

Three large Malayan Flying Foxes hang upside down from leafless tree branches. The bat on the far left has a piece of fruit in its mouth.

From there, we explored the aviary’s diverse habitats. From grasslands to treetops and tropical rainforests and wetlands, the impressively designed walk-through habitats have plenty of greenery and natural light. We saw many familiar feathered friends like parrots, flamingos, owls, finches, and toucans as well as more exotic birds, like the Andean Cock-of-the-rock, and the condor.

For an additional fee, the aviary also offers encounters with owls, falcons, their sloth, and penguins. You can also feed the penguins! We didn’t participate during our visit, but we did manage to make it to the Penguin Point habitat in time to watch aviary staff feed the African penguins. While the feeding drew a crowd, there were plenty of spots around the habitat to view the adorable penguins enjoy their fishy snacks.

Because it’s mostly indoors, the National Aviary is a great attraction to experience year-round. The aviary also works to save birds and protect habitats around the world, and visiting supports their conservation efforts.
