This year we finally checked off a Kansas City classic: the Tiblow Trot. Held every August in Bonner Springs, the race is known for its small-town charm, community feel, and—most of all—its hills.
The event offers both a 5K and a 5-mile option (for anyone who just can’t get enough climbing). We opted for the 5K, joining 193 other runners at the starting line, while 112 took on the longer route.

If we had to sum it up in one word: relentless. This was easily one of the hilliest courses we’ve tackled this year. Every time you crested one climb, another was waiting around the corner. It made for a tough but rewarding run, the kind of challenge that makes the finish line feel especially satisfying.

We made this race a little extra special by running it with our friend Emma, who joined us earlier this year at the Easter Egg 5K, and did the Shawnee Mission Triathlon with me (where I did the duathlon last month). Having a friend along for the challenge always adds to the fun (and accountability!).
Results
Despite the challenging terrain, we were proud of how we finished:
- Nate: 26:52 (8:39/mi pace), placing 4th in his age group out of 15 and 30th overall.
- William: 31:37 (10:11/mi pace), placing 10th in his age group of 16.
Not too shabby for a first Tiblow outing!
What’s Next
We’ll trade hills for city streets in a couple of weeks at the Plaza 10K on September 7, held in the heart of the historic Country Club Plaza in downtown Kansas City.
